History of the bicycle

Thanks to the unique collection ‘vélocipèdes’, the Cycling museum maps the entire history of cycling. From the wooden hobby horse, or Draisine, to the first pedal-driven bicycles of Macmillan ; from the Michaux to the high bi, from the first racing bikes to the modern mountain bike. Through the years, the bicycle has not only been a technical story, but has also played a social, a recreational and a sports-loving role. Also the role of women in the development of cycling is being honoured. Part of the Cycling museum is dedicated to the history of 100 years of acceptance and emancipation—definitely an interesting tour along the history of cycling and of the bicycle.

Do pictures from riders from the heroic era, posters of the first track meetings still exist? What did the jerseys of the first sports sponsors in cycling look like? How do you get hold of the volumes of cycling magazines? What does cycling mean for the social, sports, political and economic life? What about the high-tech of the newest time trial bikes? The Cycling museum has an enormous collection of everything of and around the world of cycling: in the first place off course many bicycles, but also pictures, films, newspapers, cycling magazines, documents, posters, books, jerseys, caps, bidons, trophies, etc.

The collection is big, perhaps the biggest one of its kind, but obviously never ending...
